PROJECT 2

Case Study (40% Group)

Green Buildings in Malaysia

PROJECT BRIEF

INTRODUCTION

The emergence of Green Buildings is evident as architects and developers increasingly prioritize environmental considerations in their projects. Despite their potential to enhance energy efficiency and promote healthier living and working spaces, these buildings often lack the attention they deserve in public discourse and media coverage. Nevertheless, decarbonizing our built environment is crucial for addressing global climate change.

Therefore, this assignment proposes a case study where groups of five students research and analyze "green" buildings accredited by national or international bodies like GBI, LEED, or BREEAM. They will examine the environmental strategies of one selected building, ideally visiting it for firsthand insights. The findings will be presented on an A1 poster and condensed into a one-minute video for social media sharing, aiming to raise awareness of sustainable building practices.

OBJECTIVES

Enhance public awareness and acknowledgment of the significance of green buildings in combatting climate change and fostering healthy environments.

Enable educational opportunities on green building by conducting a case study to extract and disseminate valuable insights into implemented environmental strategies.

Advocate for sustainable architectural practices, promoting a transition towards designs that prioritize environmental consciousness.

TASKS

  • Select a building: Pick a green building from the researched options for an extensive case study.

  • Analyze environmental strategies

  • Design an A1 poster

  • Produce a 1-minute video

OUTCOME

  • Connect environmental design considerations with local regulatory bodies, incorporating comprehension of building codes and sustainability rating tools.

  • Investigate environmental elements concerning natural or passive building design strategies aimed at achieving optimal comfort levels.

3.0 Thinking and Problem Solving Skills

6.0 Intrapersonal
Skills

Thinking and problem-solving skills are essential abilities that enable individuals to analyze situations, generate creative ideas, and devise effective solutions. These skills involve various cognitive processes, including critical thinking, analytical reasoning, creativity, and decision-making.

Effectively managing time and resources is critical for meeting deadlines and producing high-quality results. We allocate sufficient time for data collection, analysis, and documentation, prioritizing tasks based on their importance and urgency. Thus, we completed the project 1 week before submission date.

REFLECTION

Undertaking the project to conduct a case study of the PAM Centre to assess its green building features has been an enlightening experience. Exploring the various sustainable elements integrated into the building's design and operation has provided valuable insights into the practical implementation of green building principles.

One of the most notable aspects of the project was examining how the PAM Centre addressed environmental concerns while meeting the needs of its occupants. From energy-efficient lighting systems to passive cooling strategies, every aspect of the building's design seemed carefully considered to minimize its environmental footprint and enhance occupant comfort.

Overall, this project has deepened my appreciation for the role of green buildings in promoting environmental stewardship and fostering healthier, more sustainable built environments.
