ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
STUDIO I
ARC60208
Architectural Design I (ARC60208) is organized as an introductory course to architectural design. This initial design module is designed to introduce and elucidate the concept of design by exploring the representation of 'self' and the body, construction, and materiality in relation to tectonics. Students will engage in a sequence of studio-based activities and tasks that introduce the essential methods, principles, and approaches in design thinking and foundational spatial design. This learning will be enriched by delving into anthropometrics and designing intrapersonal space through creative exercises that incorporate the body's movements and user experiences.
OBJECTIVES
What I aimed to?
To investigate the generation of ideas and concepts
through interdisciplinary approaches in
- art
- design
To scrutinize the expression of the 'self' as a way of understanding how the 'body' interacts with space
To introduce fundamental concepts in architectural design
- scale and proportion
- human anthropometrics
- design principle
- materiality
To raise awareness of spatial quality and its formation
through the application and manipulation of the aforementioned design concepts
MODULE ASSESSMENTS
Projects
MODULE OUTCOME
What I have learned?
Generate design concepts
- exploring diverse sources
- abstracting ideas through the creative process
Recognize essential architectural design elements and principles
crafting an architectural composition that showcases effective space-making
Connect the concepts of individual 'self' and the body to space
exploring their experiential qualities
Develop a foundational understanding of materiality and detailing as tools
to capture the experiential qualities of the design
Show proficient manual drawing and model-making skills
- effectively represent
- communicate the design
SELF-REFLECTION
What I feel?
Reflection
The Architecture Design Studio I has been a transformative experience, enriching my understanding of architectural design and solidifying my foundation in the architecture field. The assignments and projects require a thoughtful allocation of time to ensure they are completed on schedule. Learning to manage time wisely has been a crucial aspect, and I've adopted a structured approach by prioritizing tasks, breaking down assignments, and creating realistic schedules that accommodate both design work and other responsibilities. Regularly reviewing and adjusting this schedule allows me to adapt to evolving project requirements. Collaboration with peers has proved invaluable, fostering innovative solutions and a more comprehensive understanding of the design brief. As I navigate through this journey, it has not only equipped me with architectural knowledge but also essential skills in effective time management, laying a robust groundwork for future pursuits in the field.
