ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
STUDIO IV
ARC60508
In Semester 4, themed “Engaging Environment and Community,” the studio focuses on designing for sustainability by responding to environmental conditions and addressing the needs of a specific user community. Students study relevant precedents to explore how building enclosures interact poetically with natural elements like sun, wind, and site context.
Projects consider program complexity, topography, vegetation, cultural activities, and passive design strategies. The outcome should blend seamlessly with the environment and enhance user experience. Students apply knowledge from previous Architecture and Environment modules and integrate insights from Asian Architecture to develop contextually sensitive, community-driven design narratives.

Reflection
This module has deepened my understanding of designing with environmental and social responsibility. Through site analysis and precedent studies, I became more aware of how natural elements such as sunlight, wind, and topography can inform meaningful and sustainable design decisions. I learned to approach architecture not just as a form, but as a response to both environmental conditions and human needs.
Exploring environmental poetics challenged me to think beyond function, prompting me to create spaces that enhance user experience through materiality, light, and contextual sensitivity. Integrating knowledge from previous modules—especially Architecture and Environment—strengthened my design process, allowing me to connect sustainability with cultural and site-specific narratives.
This project also helped me improve my visual and verbal communication skills, especially in expressing complex ideas through drawings, models, and presentations.
Overall, the module pushed me to think more critically and holistically, and I now feel more confident in designing architecture that engages both the environment and the community.
