PROJECT 2
PROJECT 2
DESIGNING WITH ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES
AND MATERIALITY (30% GROUP)
PROJECT BRIEF
INTRODUCTION
This project aims to build on your previous assignment, where you analyzed and diagrammed architectural principles.
You will now apply these principles to explore and refine your conceptual and operational procedures, creating a meaningful gesture in architectural spaces.
Your chosen architectural principle(s) will need to be clearly defined and used to investigate their potential meanings and implications, guiding two key design criteria: form generation and space crafting.
Despite significant advancements in controlling the natural environment and exploring new frontiers, modern individuals often struggle with self-mastery and clarity, highlighting the importance of aligning architectural design with deeper personal and existential goals.
OBJECTIVES
To encourage thoughtful exploration and discussion of spatial qualities through architectural conceptualization, focusing on design intentions and objectives.
To demonstrate the importance of using drawing and modeling as essential tools in the architectural design process.
TASKS
Large Group Task: Site Data Collection (Macro-Site)
-
Collect and analyze site data using physical maps/diagrams for layout, climate, natural features, existing structures, activities, and sensory aspects
Small Group & Individual Tasks: Diagramming Site Analysis (Micro-Site)
-
Produce Design Response Vignettes matrix based on site data
-
Choose 2 micro-sites with lake views
-
Create a site analysis on up to 4 A3 pages
4.0 Communication Skills
7.0 Citizenship And Global Perspective
Working on the observatory tower project greatly improved our communication skills. Regular meetings and discussions ensured that all team members were aligned and informed, facilitating effective collaboration and problem-solving.
The observatory tower project broadened our understanding of citizenship and global perspectives by emphasizing the importance of designing structures that respect and enhance the natural environment. We considered how our design could contribute positively to the community and align with sustainable practices.
REFLECTION
Reflecting on our project to design an observatory tower, I am impressed by the collaborative effort of my group members. Each person took on their specific tasks with dedication and skill, ensuring that every aspect of the project was handled with care and precision. This division of labor allowed us to leverage individual strengths, leading to a high-quality final design.
Throughout the project, our ability to work together effectively was crucial. We communicated regularly, shared feedback, and supported one another, which enhanced our collective understanding of architectural principles. This teamwork not only streamlined the process but also helped us tackle complex design challenges more efficiently.
The project provided valuable insights into using architectural principles in practice. Our detailed work and adherence to these principles enabled us to capture the experiential qualities of the observatory tower. This hands-on experience deepened our appreciation for materiality and design detailing, highlighting the importance of thoroughness and precision in architectural design.
