ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II

ARC60308

PROJECT 1

PROJECT 1

DIAGRAMMING ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES (10% GROUP)

PROJECT BRIEF

INTRODUCTION

This project aims to use diagrams to analyze architectural designs by uncovering geometric patterns that organize architectural works.

Diagrams should align form with function, bridging the gap between formal principles and architectural intent.

Architectural Principles, such as balance and symmetry, guide successful design outcomes. This assignment will teach you to diagram these principles by abstracting and simplifying ideas, focusing on architectonics—solid forms, planes, lines, and frames.

By the end, you will gain a deeper understanding of these concepts and how to apply them in future projects.

OBJECTIVES

To identify architects and their projects

To analyze and diagram the architectural works of chosen architects

To create basic architectural compositions using solids, planes, lines, and frames

TASKS

  • Each group gets a case study and can propose alternatives

  • Research the assigned architect and building, then hand-draw architectural drawings on A3 landscape

  • Analyze the building's design intentions, context, space planning, circulation, and structure, and translate these into diagrams

  • Create 5 analysis diagrams and 5 diagrammatic modelsto express the building's key ideas

OUTCOME (MODEL)

  • Recognizing architects and their works

  • Translating analysis into architectural diagrams

  • Creating basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines, and frames

1.0 Discipline Specific Knowledge

3.0 Thinking And Problem Solving Skills

Completing the case study of the Wood and Mountain Cabin significantly enhanced my discipline-specific knowledge, particularly in recognizing architectural styles and translating design analysis into diagrams.

This hands-on experience deepened my understanding of architectural principles and improved my ability to create precise and informative compositions.

Working on the Wood and Mountain Cabin case study honed my thinking and problem-solving skills by challenging me to analyze complex architectural designs and translate them into effective diagrams. This process improved my ability to approach problems methodically and find creative solutions, enhancing my overall analytical and design capabilities.

REFLECTION

Reflecting on the case study of the Wood and Mountain Cabin, I found working with my group members to be both productive and collaborative. Each member contributed effectively, ensuring that we were always on the same page. Our teamwork was key to the successful completion of this project, as everyone played their part and brought their unique strengths to the table.

This was our first time creating architectural diagrams, and the experience was incredibly valuable. It significantly increased our knowledge and skills, allowing us to understand the intricacies of translating architectural analysis into visual formats. The hands-on experience with diagrams enhanced our ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively.

We diligently followed our progress each week, which helped us stay on track and address any challenges promptly. This consistent monitoring and collaborative effort not only improved the quality of our research and analysis but also deepened our understanding of architectural design principles and diagramming techniques. Overall, the project was a great learning experience that highlighted the importance of teamwork, consistent effort, and effective communication.
