MATERIAL EXPERIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE (30% GROUP)
Structural & Architectural Building Material Applications
PROJECT BRIEF
INTRODUCTION
The application of materials in building construction is diverse, with careful selection and placement influencing a building’s overall appearance and perception.
This project aims to introduce students to the practical use of building materials in architectural design.
Students will conduct a detailed case study on how materials are used as both architectural and structural elements in a chosen building, examining their experiential impact on users and describing the installation process.
This exercise seeks to deepen students' understanding of why specific materials are chosen for various architectural applications and their significant influence on building design.
OBJECTIVES
To distinguish between architectural and structural materials
To describe the types of building materials used in construction
To demonstrate the installation process of building materials in buildings
TASKS
-
Conduct a case study on a notable building in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor with your group of seven students
-
Identify and analyze five architectural building materials and two structural building materials used in the chosen building
-
Select one material that has a significant experiential impact on users and illustrate its installation process
-
Include the historical background of the building
-
Analyze one material in detail, including its experiential impact and installation process sketch.
-
Summarize the overall conclusion on the application of building materials
OUTCOME
(A1 Poster)
4.0 Communication Skills
7.0 Citizenship And Global Perspective
Coordinating with team members involved frequent discussions, clear exchanges of ideas, and collaborative problem-solving, which ensured that everyone was aligned and informed throughout the process. Presenting our findings on materials and their applications required us to articulate complex technical information in a clear and accessible manner, improving our ability to convey detailed analyses effectively.
Examining the materials and construction methods used in such a high-profile, large-scale project emphasized the impact of architectural decisions on the environment and local communities. The project underscored how thoughtful design can contribute positively to global and local contexts, fostering a more responsible and inclusive approach to architecture.
REFLECTION
Reflecting on the project on Bukit Jalil Stadium, analyzing its materials and applications provided deep insights into the complexities of large-scale architectural design. The exploration of various materials used in the stadium, from concrete and steel to specialized coatings, highlighted their critical roles in both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
Understanding how these materials contribute to the stadium’s functionality and visual impact enhanced our appreciation of material selection in creating iconic structures. The project allowed us to delve into the practical applications of these materials, examining their specific uses in the stadium’s design and construction. We analyzed how the choice of materials addressed both the demands of a high-traffic public space and the need for durability and performance under various environmental conditions. This practical approach helped us grasp how material properties influence not only the construction process but also the long-term maintenance and user experience of the building.
Overall, the project provided valuable experience in evaluating the relationship between materials and architectural design. By focusing on Bukit Jalil Stadium, we gained a comprehensive understanding of how different materials are employed to achieve both functional and aesthetic goals. This experience emphasized the importance of informed material choices in shaping successful architectural outcomes and contributed significantly to our knowledge of building construction.
